Please join us for the North Carolina Veteran Art Show
from Thursday, November 14th – Sunday, November 17th. 
 
The Joel Fund and Heart2Hand Veteran artist Lt. Colonel (retired), Bernardine Donato, are excited to host the four-day art exhibit at the Tobacco Wood Brewing Company Durham location. 
 
This art show will contain original pieces created by North Carolina Veterans of the United States Armed Forces. This family-friendly event will showcase art from North Carolina veterans of all backgrounds, art levels, and branches of service. 
 
The hours to view the artwork are as follows:
Thursday, Nov 14th, 1 pm – 7 pm
Friday, Nov 15th, 1 pm – 8 pm – Third Friday Durham
Saturday Nov 16th 1 pm – 7 pm
Sunday, Nov 17th, 1 pm – 5 pm 
 
There will be a closing reception on Sunday, November, 17th, 2024 at the Durham Bottling Co. location. Artists are highly encouraged to attend and pick up their artwork after the reception. Join us to celebrate Veterans Day weekend to appreciate original military veteran’s artwork while enjoying food, beer, or soft drinks.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

ART / SHOW DETAILS

Thank you to all the artists who submitted their artwork! Selected artists have been notified via email to make appointments to drop off their artwork at The Joel Fund Art Studio. Please contact Isabella Brezenski at isabella@thejoelfund.org if you have any questions about the drop-off process. All artwork needs to be delivered by Friday, November 4th.

TIMELINE

The submission process is to make sure the size of each piece will fit in the limited space we have and that the artwork is suitable for the family-friendly Tobacco Woods Brewing Company. Please provide an artist statement along with your submission(s). 

Artist Statement:
Please include the following information in your artist statement:

  • How long did you serve in the military?
  • How has art helped you after your time in the military?
  • How does your chosen art medium help you express yourself creatively?
  • How long have you been practicing art?
  • What inspired you to create this piece of art?

 

Submission open date: August 1st, 2024

Submission end date: October 1st, 2024

This is the deadline to submit artist information and images of artwork. Artwork drop-off information will be shared via email upon approval of your work. This is not a juried show, but pieces will be selected due to limited space.

Submission criteria

  • Must be a US Military Veteran, Active Duty, Reservist, and/or National Guard service member located in North Carolina 
  • All art mediums accepted – 2D, 3D, literary art, performance, and more 
  • Artwork must be original and owned by the artist
  • Artists may submit up to 2 artworks for consideration
  • All experience levels accepted

No artwork will be sold at this show

Artwork criteria
Due to space restraints, artwork should be no larger than 20″x24″ for 2D pieces and no larger 32″x32″ and no more than 100lbs for 3D pieces  

  • 2D artwork should be wired or framed and be ready for hanging
  • Title of artwork required 
  • Artist Statement required with submission. More details below.
 

For 2D and 3D submissions: a picture of each piece (attachment) 

For performance submissions:* a paragraph section to describe the performance (live music, monologue, one-person show, etc) and a place to attach video recordings of the performance 

For literary submissions:* Typed up, each separate submission should be a separate attachment

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATIONS

The Joel Fund is a non-profit organization dedicated to reconnecting veterans to life at home located in Wake Forest, NC. The Joel Fund’s Operation ART Program offers low cost art classes for veterans and their families. Operation ART program students will showcase their work created in art classes alongside submitted artworks.

Bernardine Donato retired after serving 24 years in the US Navy and the CA Air National Guard. She is a veteran artist who currently resides in Durham, NC.

Tobacco Wood Brewing Company (TWBC) is the first female veteran-owned brewery in North Carolina headed by Mara Shelton. Known for their award-winning local beer, community events, veteran focus, and Mara’s support of the arts, TWBC is the perfect place to showcase local NC veteran artists.
