ANOTHER LEGACY INSERTS UNDER THE PEARLY GATES.
JOE, YOU ARE RELIEVED OF THE WATCH;
WE HAVE THE WATCH.
FAIR WINDS AND FOLLOWING SEAS MATE,
YOU WILL BE MISSED BY THOSE WHO ARE NEVER OUT OF THE FIGHT.
LONG LIVE THE BROTHERHOOD.
SEE YOU IN FORT PIERCE, 2015.
These words came to me in an email shortly after my dad passed away. I read them often because they provoke such vivid images for me. There is such a truth to these words, I feel them in my core. So, I can only imagine what they mean to the men and women who fight for our freedom.
“Fair winds and Following Seas” is a nautical phrase of good luck and references a safe journey home. On November 8th, 2015, during a sunrise ceremony, my dad’s ashes were scattered in the water off the coast of Florida. My dad loved the beach and the ocean. I consider this date as the anniversary of my dad’s journey home.
As I remember my dad on this anniversary, I am also reminded that Veterans Day is approaching. Please remember to honor the men and women who have protected our country. They are never out of the fight.
